For many people, holidays and travelling are one of their few opportunities to fully unwind and relax in an otherwise hectic world, and thus a luxury location of sun and pampering is just as desirable as those “get out and experience the world” kind of holidays.

The Bahamas oozes luxury in every sense of the word, and as such it is no wonder that it is amongst the world's most desirable travel destinations. One of many stunning locations in the Americas, it is famed for its golden beaches, turquoise waters and glorious sunshine. It is every inch the picturesque and idyllic holiday location that adorns social media posts and travel brochure covers, making it a 'must visit' on anybody's travel list. The Bahamas has so much to offer, no matter what kind of holiday you’re looking for, from adventure to relaxation, the some 700 inhabited and uninhabited islands offer a plethora of opportunities for every type of traveller.

Of course, it comes as no surprise that the main draw of the Bahamas is its luxurious beaches and that life, more often than not, centres around them. Whilst all beaches have their own draws, their own identities; there are two beaches in particular that stand out from the crowd and make them an essential part of any visitor’s travel itinerary.
Gold Rock Beach in the Lucayan National Park on Grand Bahama is, quite literally, a tropical paradise. It is the epitome of idyllic, with breath-taking surroundings that are so picturesque you’d be forgiven for thinking the scene in front of you was, indeed, a photograph. The crystal clear waters and sparkling sands of Gold Rock Beach truly are a sight to behold, the stunning location being world renowned and even having been filming locations for various projects, including parts of the Pirates of the Caribbean films. Despite its popularity, the beach remains a natural paradise and can often be relatively quiet and tourist-free.

Similarly, the infamous ‘Pig Beach’ has proved popular amongst locals and tourists alike, infamous for its 20-odd swimming pigs who reside on the uninhabited island. Whilst the official reason behind the pigs presence on the island is highly contested, one thing that is certain is that they have become an exceptionally popular tourist attraction.
Of course, whilst relaxation is perhaps the first thing that comes to mind when picturing a holiday in the Bahamas, it is but one of the many reasons to come to this tropical paradise, and there are so many other aspects of the Bahamas to be discovered that appeal to such a wide variety of travellers. For animal lovers there are numerous excursions and opportunities to experience the abundance of life that the Bahamas holds. Blue Lagoon Island is one such example: home to both dolphins and sea lions, the island offers visitors the chance to see the animals in their natural habitat, whilst locations such as Castaway Cay on the Great Abaco Island provide the chance to experience sea life in the most intimate way, with snorkelling and diving. Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is particularly renowned for its diving and snorkelling opportunities, with offshore coral reefs in pristine waters being in equal parts fascinating and breathtaking.
For those who are looking for something with a bit more adventure and activity, the Bahamas offers plenty of opportunity to engage in watersports from kayaking and canoeing, to paddle boarding and jet skiing. For those with an active lifestyle, it is the perfect way to combine sight-seeing with something a little more active, be it jet skiing to the lagoon to see sharks and sea turtles or kayaking through national parks, this past-time offers a unique way to experience the Bahamas. Similarly, there are plenty of opportunities to discover the Bahamas by foot, with most islands having their own hikes and trails. Amongst the most popular of these for both tourists and locals is on Andros Island, home to the Bimini Nature hiking trail which offers a unique experience of the flora and wildlife of the Bahamas and the Cat Island hiking trail which leads to the top of Mount Alvernia, offering spectacular views of the island.
For foodies, the cuisine of the Bahamas is eclectic and all-encompassing, combining a fusion of different cultures and flavours to provide its visitors with a variety of options from the everyday to the exotic. Many cite Cafe Matisse as one of the great culinary experiences of the Bahamas and Nassau in particular. The Italian restaurant combines delicious Italian food, with a slight Bahamian twist, with a stunning setting in the form of a tropical courtyard paradise. For those looking for luxury Baha Mar in the capital of Nassau offers an array of different culinary experiences, with delicious traditional and native foods, glorious cocktails and local beers, to a taste of the world. However, if you are looking for the ultimate authentic taste of Bahamian cuisine then Arawak Cay or ‘The Fish Fry’ is the place to go, offering a wide variety of restaurants that specialise in the traditional taste of the Bahamas. If you love seafood, which is unsurprisingly one of the staples of Bahamian cuisine, then Arawak Cay should be at the top of your travel itinerary, serving everything from lobster, snapper and grouper, to the national dish of the Bahamas, the conch.

It is hard to express the full beauty of the Bahamas, a destination with so much to offer to so many different types of traveller. It is the perfect combination of luxury and tradition, of adventure and relaxation; which is what makes it an essential addition to anybody’s travel bucket list.
